Why Kintsugi?

Kintsugi, or Kintsukuroi, poetically translates to golden joinery, and is the centuries-old Japanese art of fixing broken pottery, honoring the artifact’s unique history by emphasizing the cracks with liquid gold.

I first learned about Kintsugi a number of years ago and felt highly drawn to the concept of displaying the breaks rather than trying to hide something that, in truth, can never be hidden.

What I didn’t know at the time was that this beautiful art form would become the way I envision mending the pieces of my shattered heart.

With Kintsugi, the flaws and cracks themselves shine with beauty and strength. The piece becomes more rare, unique, flawed, and storied. The cracks become a part of the piece’s history - an extraordinarily valued part of the history.

I fully believe that the shattered heart of a grieving mother - be it due to unexpected beginnings, loss, or medical challenges - is an extraordinarily unique, valued offering in our humanity. Our unbearable experiences shape us forever.

My heart is beautiful and strong.

Your heart is beautiful and strong.

Collectively, we are glorious and powerful.
